2 Things To Talk To The Plumber Installing Your New Water Line About

If you need to get a new water line installed at your house, you should make sure that you talk to a plumber about getting it done. When you are talking to them, there are some things that you should make sure you ask about so that you are getting the right lines installed and that installation is done correctly. You don't want to have it redone in just a year or two. So, what are some of the things that you should make sure to ask about?

Frost Line

If you live somewhere that regularly gets below freezing during the winter, there is going to be a level in the ground that is the frost line. That line is going to be determined by how far down the ground freezes during an average year. Some years the freeze, won't go down so far; other years, it may go down a little further, but the frost line is a good average. Where your frost line is depends on where you live. It can go down as deep as 80 inches. If at all possible, you want to have any water lines installed under the frost line. One reason for this is because when the ground thaws, it can cause frost heaves. Those heaves can be big enough to disrupt roads and to move pipes around. If it isn't possible to install the new water line below the frost line, talk to the plumber about what you can do to insulate it against freezing and stabilizing it so that it won't move when the frost leaves the ground.

Existing Pipes

Any new water line is going to have to join up with your already existing pipes. Depending on what kind of pipes are already in your plumbing system, there may be extra steps that the plumber is going to have to do in order to marry the new and the old together. For example, if you have PVC pipes at your house and your plumber is installing a copper water line, they are going to make sure that they have the proper adapter piece for each end of the pipes. The adapter for the PVC pipe will screw into the adapter for the copper pipe since they can't be mated directly to each other.
